2002 Ford Excursion Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Out in the Seacoast neighborhood of Imperial Beach, a guy called me about his 2002 Ford Excursion sitting in a beach lot off Seacoast Drive. He'd lost his only key somewhere in the sand. He walked the beach for close to an hour, talked to the lifeguard station, checked the water, came up empty. The truck was just sitting there.
He'd already called the dealer and got told it was a Monday thing, and that he'd need a tow because they couldn't do anything without the vehicle in the bay. He found me somewhere in between that phone call and resigning himself to a long weekend.
I got there that afternoon. The door wasn't going to open itself, so I started there. Used my tools to work the lock open mechanically and decode the cut pattern from the lock itself. That gave me what I needed to cut a fresh blade on site. No key to copy. No existing key needed. Just the lock telling me what it wants.
From there I connected through the OBD port and ran the all-keys-lost sequence for the anti-theft system. That process clears out whatever keys the vehicle had in memory and starts fresh. On these older Fords it does have a timed security wait built into the process, so you sit there and let it run. Can't rush it. Once that cleared, I programmed the new transponder key and confirmed the engine started and stayed running, which is the real test. A key that only cranks the car isn't a finished job.
I cut him a second key before I packed up. One key is how people end up calling me from a beach parking lot on a Saturday.
The whole job happened in that lot, about 45 minutes start to finish. He drove home with two working keys and didn't have to wait until Monday or pay for a tow.
