How Ranger Keys Shifted Year by Year
Second Generation Late Models
The 1996-2001 Ranger ran PATS I and PATS II with Texas 4C then 4D63 chips. Plain blade, no buttons, no battery, on-board self-pair with a working key.
Third Generation (Facelift)
The 2002-2011 refresh added the 3-button remote head key option on XLT and FX4. Texas 4D63 80-bit chip, standard cut blade, CR2032 in the head.
Fourth Generation (North America Return)
The 2019-2023 T6 Ranger jumped to ID47 HITAG Pro smart fobs. Push-button start standard, laser-cut emergency blade in the shell, Ford server authentication mandatory.
Fifth Generation
The 2024+ refresh moved some builds to ID49 AES encryption. Same fob form factor, harder cryptography under the head.
Which Key Is in Your Ranger?
Plain metal blade, chip in the head, no buttons, no battery. Crank the cylinder and the immobilizer handshakes.
Three buttons on the head, standard cut blade, Texas 4D63 chip, CR2032 inside.
Pocket-resident smart fob on T6 trucks, push-button start runs ignition, laser-cut emergency blade in the shell.
Same smart fob shape on 2024+, ID49 AES cryptography inside.
Ranger Key Pricing in San Diego
All prices cover the blank, the cut, the pairing, and the road test; San Diego lockouts run $105-$145 and are billed separately.
EZ Car Keyz vs. the San Diego Dealer
Mossy Ford does not stock the early Ranger blanks and adds dealer markup on the new T6 trucks. We bring real pricing on both.
Ford Ranger Key Problems We See in San Diego
PATS Transponder Failure
Theft icon flashes, Ranger cranks but never fires. Classic on 1996-2011 trucks after a battery disconnect or worn transponder. Marco resets PATS through OBD-II curbside in Lakeside, El Cajon, or wherever the truck sits.
Key Fob Battery Drain
Smart fob on a 2019+ T6 Ranger stops responding. Most cases trace to a flat CR2032, a 90-second swap. Battery dies again inside weeks means a fob board short.
Ignition Cylinder Wear
Soft-cut blades on 1996-2011 Rangers wear fast on high-mileage work trucks. A VIN-cut blade fixes most cases for cheap before the cylinder rebuild stacks on.
PIN Code Lockout
Owners try eBay fobs on 2019+ Rangers and corner shops fail the programming. ID47 demands Ford PIN retrieval or server authentication.
Can You DIY a Ranger Key?
Yes on 1996-2011 trucks with two working keys. PATS on-board two-key add procedure runs in five minutes.
Possible on 2002-2011 with two working keys, same procedure.
No DIY on 2019-2023 T6 trucks. ID47 demands Ford PIN retrieval or server authentication.
Smart-fob 2024+ trucks need Ford server authentication plus proximity pairing.

Did You Know?
The Ranger has two completely separate lifetimes in North America. The original 1983-2011 Ranger was a Ford-only compact built in Edison, NJ and Twin Cities, MN. The 2019+ Ranger is a globally-shared T6 platform built in Wayne, Michigan. The 2011 final-run Ranger ran PATS III with the Texas 4D63 80-bit chip; the 2019+ Ranger jumped straight to ID47 HITAG Pro with Intelligent Access smart fobs as standard. Eight years off the market took a $20,000 truck and turned it into a $35,000 truck.
