2002 Ford Ranger
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Do I need to tow my Ranger to the dealer if I've lost all my keys?

Not if you call me first. Dealers will tell you the vehicle has to come to them, and if it won't start, that means a tow on your dime before they even look at the job. That cost stacks on top of what they charge for the key work itself, and it adds hours to your day. I come to the vehicle. The programming happens at the truck, in whatever parking lot or driveway it's sitting in. No tow required.

Q: What do I need to prove I own the vehicle?

A valid photo ID and proof of ownership, either your registration or your title. I also verify the VIN from the dashboard plate and the door jamb sticker on the Ranger to confirm everything matches before any work starts. That's the same standard a dealer would hold you to, but dealers sometimes add extra layers. Owners who lost keys in a theft situation have been asked to produce a police report on top of registration.

Q: I bought a replacement remote head key online. Will it work if I just bring it to you?

Sometimes, with a caveat. The key has to be the correct type for a 2002 Ranger, uncut and unprogrammed. If it's already been cut to a different vehicle or previously programmed, it can cause problems. A key that was registered to another Ford and never properly erased may not accept new programming cleanly. If you've got an uncut, unprogrammed blank that matches the factory spec for your fob, I can cut it to your truck and program it on site.

Q: My Ranger starts fine but the remote buttons stopped working. Do I need a whole new key?

Not necessarily. Start with the CR2032 battery inside the fob head. That's the first thing to rule out. A weak cell will kill button range before it kills transponder function entirely, which is why the truck still starts but the lock and unlock buttons feel dead or only work a few inches from the door. Pop the fob open, swap in a fresh CR2032, and test range from a normal distance. If range comes back, you're done.

2002 Ford Ranger Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A woman in Downtown Ramona called me about a spare key for her 2002 Ranger. She still had her original, the truck ran fine, she just wanted a backup before anything went wrong. Sensible.

She had already called the Ford dealer. They broke the price into pieces the way dealers do: the key itself, a cutting fee, a programming labor charge. She asked me to just come to her office parking lot and get it done.

I pulled up, she handed me her original remote head key, and I verified the VIN at the door jamb before touching anything. Plugged into the OBD port under the dash, registered the new key to the truck, then cut the blade to match. Walked her through a quick function check: doors locking and unlocking, the truck starting clean on the new key.

Twenty-five minutes. She was back at her desk before her lunch break ended.

She mentioned the dealer quote at the end, almost as a footnote. She saved a good chunk, and more importantly she didn't burn half a day.

Ford Ranger Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I'm locked out with no spare key. Can you come to me?▼

Yes. Call me and I'll come directly to wherever you and your 2002 Ranger are in Downtown Ramona. I carry the blanks and the programming equipment to handle the job on site. You don't need a tow truck, you don't need to figure out a ride, and you don't need to wait on a dealer's schedule. All-keys-lost on this generation Ranger means the onboard relearn isn't an option since that requires two existing programmed keys to work.
