The 2002 Ranger remote head key runs a passive anti-theft system that requires at least two already-programmed keys present to do the onboard add-a-key relearn. If you only have one working key, or zero, you need a tool on the OBD port to force new key registration. The onboard sequence is real and it works, but only when you already have two good keys to trigger it. Most owners don't. Also worth knowing: the fob portion and the transponder chip inside the head are a single unit. You can't just swap a remote onto an existing key. The whole remote head key gets cut and programmed together. Keep a battery maintainer on the vehicle during any programming session. A voltage drop mid-sequence can leave the immobilizer in a confused state that takes extra steps to clear.
