How the Freestar Key System Evolved
First Generation (Pre-Facelift)
The 2004-2005 Freestar ran PATS II with Texas 4D63 chips. Standard cut blades, on-board self-pair with two working keys.
First Generation (Facelift)
The 2006-2007 final-run vans moved to PATS III 80-bit. Same Texas 4D63 chip with harder cryptography, same plain blade or 3-button remote head depending on trim.
Which Key Is in Your Freestar?
Plain metal blade, chip in the head, no buttons, no battery. Crank and the immobilizer handshakes.
Three buttons on the head, standard cut blade, Texas 4D63 chip inside, CR2032 powers the remote.

Freestar Key Problems We See in San Diego
RKE Programming Timing Failures
Theft icon flashes, Freestar cranks but never fires. Classic on every model year after a battery disconnect. Marco resets PATS through OBD-II curbside in Lemon Grove, El Cajon, or wherever the van sits.
Fuse #17 Faults
Soft-cut blades on Freestars wear fast on high-mileage school-run vans. A VIN-cut replacement fixes most cases before the cylinder rebuild stacks on.
Transponder Key Lockouts
Remote head key on a Freestar stops responding. Tired CR2032 in most cases; swap the cell. Recurring drain means a fob board short.
Can You Pair It Yourself?
Yes on every Freestar model year with two working keys. PATS on-board two-key add procedure runs in five minutes.
No DIY path exists for all-keys-lost. We pick the cylinder, cut the blade, and pair via OBD-II.

Did You Know?
The Freestar is the minivan that replaced the Windstar and was itself replaced by nothing, marking Ford's exit from the minivan segment entirely. Built in Oakville, Ontario from 2004 to 2007, it ran PATS III with the Texas 4D63 chip throughout its short life. Twenty years after the last one rolled off the line, we still pair Freestar chips weekly across San Diego County.
