2004 Ford Freestar
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2004 Ford Freestar Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A dad in Eden Gardens over in Solana Beach called me on a Monday afternoon. His 2004 Freestar would not start. He had one key left, it had been through the wash at some point, and the transponder had finally given up.

He had already called the dealer that morning. They told him the earliest appointment was Thursday, they would need to order the key blank, and he would have to arrange a tow since the van would not start. He had a toddler, a car seat, and no backup vehicle. Thursday was not a real option.

I was at his place in Eden Gardens that same afternoon. Cut a replacement key blade to match the door lock cylinder, then enrolled the transponder chip through the diagnostic port so the immobilizer would recognize it. Cycled the ignition, confirmed the security light behaved the way it should, and started it cold twice to make sure it was not a fluke.

He stood there watching the whole thing in his driveway. It took less time than the hold music at the dealership.

Monday problem, Monday fix. His old dead key got erased out of the system so it cannot be used on the van. The dealer route would have cost him days and a tow bill on top of their price. He picked up his kid from daycare that afternoon without missing a beat.
