How Ford Transit Keys Have Shifted
1st Generation (VH)
The 2015-2019 launch generation shipped with ID47 HITAG Pro and a mix of plain-blade transponders on base fleet trims and smart fobs on retail trims.
2nd Generation (Facelift 1)
The 2020-2022 refresh standardized ID47 across most builds. Push-button start grew across trim levels, laser-cut emergency blade in the fob shell.
3rd Generation (Facelift 2)
The 2023-2024 trucks added Phone-as-a-Key on some configurations. ID47 chip plus encrypted Ford server authentication required for every new key.
4th Generation (A350/Next Gen)
The 2025 builds moved to ID49 AES encryption on select trims. Same fob form factor, harder cryptography, mandatory Ford TIS server round-trip on pairing.
Which Key Is in Your Transit?
Fleet-spec plain blade transponder, ID47 chip in the head. Simple, durable, cheap to replace on cargo van trims.
Three-button remote head key on early fleet trims, Texas 4D63 or ID47 depending on build, standard cut blade.
Pocket-resident smart fob, push-button start runs ignition, laser-cut emergency blade in the shell.
Same smart fob form factor on 2025+, ID49 AES cryptography inside. Mandatory Ford server pairing.

Ford Transit Key Problems We See in San Diego
PATS Malfunction After Battery Replacement
Smart fob on a Transit stops responding. Most cases trace to a flat CR2032, a 90-second swap. Battery dies again inside weeks means a fob board short. We pair a fresh fob on-site at the depot.
Key Fob Battery Drain
Owners try eBay fobs on Transits and corner shops fail the programming. ID47 demands Ford PIN retrieval or server authentication. Autel IM608 and VVDI Key Tool Plus on every van.
Tibbe Blade Wear
Fleet keys wear faster than retail keys. The laser-cut emergency blade inside the smart fob shell can wear if used as the primary blade. We can cut a fresh blade and pair.
PEPS Antenna Failure
Transit says 'No Key Detected' randomly. Usually a fading CR2032; the proximity radio drops out before the lock buttons quit. Swap the cell first.
Can You DIY a Transit Key?
No DIY path exists on most Transit builds. ID47 plus Ford server authentication mandatory.
Plain-blade transponder fleet trims sometimes allow on-board pairing with two working keys, year-dependent.
Smart-fob trucks need Ford server authentication plus proximity pairing. No driveway DIY.
All-keys-lost is always a Ford server-authentication job. Aftermarket shops without credentials will turn you away.
Battery swap in the fob is the only owner-doable maintenance on smart-fob builds.

Did You Know?
The Transit replaced the E-Series after 54 years of production. Ford built the first US-market Transits in Kansas City starting in 2014. Every Transit since launch has shipped with ID47 HITAG Pro, no PATS legacy hardware. Push-button start on many trims, laser-cut emergency blade in the shell, Ford server authentication mandatory. The truck that retired the E-150 came with the most expensive-to-pair key Ford had ever fitted to a commercial van.
