2024 Ford Transit
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2024 Ford Transit Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was parked near Del Mar Village wrapping up another job when my phone rang. Guy with a 2024 Ford Transit, cargo configuration, sitting in his apartment complex lot. His spare fob had stopped being recognized. Not dead, not lost, just the van acting like it didn't exist anymore. He had already called the dealer.

They quoted him a number that made him pause, told him he'd need to arrange a tow since the van wouldn't start, and said they could probably fit him in later in the week. He said "later in the week" like he was still processing it. He used the van for work. Later in the week was not an option.

I told him I could be there in about twenty minutes.

When I pulled up, the fob battery tested low, but not dead, which is that awkward zone where the van sees the fob just enough to not give a clean error but not enough to actually start. I swapped the CR2450 first. Still no start. The fob itself had given up. So I pulled out the replacement, got my software connected to the OBD port, ran through the key registration sequence, and waited out the security timer. That part is just watching a progress bar. The van does what it needs to do.

The new fob registered clean. I walked every button, checked the door locks, confirmed the van started and idled normally before I packed up.

He asked what the dealer would have charged, total, with the tow. I told him to think about it in terms of what he saved instead. He did the math and just nodded.

The whole thing happened in his parking lot. He never left.
