I got a call from a guy out in Rancho San Diego, El Cajon side, who runs a small delivery operation out of his Transit.
He'd lost his only fob a few days earlier and had been borrowing a key from a neighbor just to get by. By the time he called me he was already frustrated, and when he mentioned the dealer he just laughed. They'd told him a week out minimum, possibly longer because they'd need to order parts, and he'd have to tow it in if he couldn't drive it there.
He could drive it, barely, but the idea of sitting at a dealership for a week without his van was a non-starter.
I pulled up to his place with the right fob shell, the right battery, and my programming equipment. Pulled the VIN off the door jamb, confirmed everything matched, and got to work. The all-keys-lost process on this generation takes a little time because there's a timed sequence built into it, but it's not complicated when you've done it before. New fob, enrolled to the vehicle, tested every button, confirmed the van recognized it the way it should.
He stood there watching the whole thing with his coffee going cold, which I always take as a good sign. People who watch are people who actually want to understand what they're paying for.
The dealer route would have cost him a week of downtime on top of whatever they charged. He was back to work the same morning.
