A fleet manager from Cardiff-by-the-Sea reached out about a 2022 Transit. The van was sitting at a small commercial property off San Elijo Avenue and the one working fob had taken a hit, cracked housing, intermittent button response, and range that was down to about two feet. Not lost, but close enough to lost that you didn't want to push it.
She had already called the dealer. The answer was bring it in, wait for a parts order, come back for a second appointment. She was running deliveries out of that van. Two separate dealer trips wasn't going to work.
I pulled up with the fob spec already looked up. The Transit uses a four-button smart fob with the factory FCC ID on it, paired to the vehicle through the diagnostic port. The fob battery is a CR2450, which I carry specifically for this van because it shows up on my schedule often enough. The damaged fob still had enough function to confirm the van would start, so I wasn't going in all-keys-lost, which is a different process.
I programmed the new fob on site, confirmed all four buttons, walked both barn doors, checked the ignition, and tested the original damaged fob to make sure it was still registered and not dropped from the system. Both worked. She had a backup and a functional primary in about 45 minutes.
The dealer quote came up at the end of the conversation, the way it usually does. She said it had felt like the only option before she called me. I hear that a lot with the Transit. The programming requirement makes people assume dealer-only. It's just not true.
