Out near the Naval Base Area in Coronado, I got a call about a Transit with a cracked key shell. The owner had been nursing it for a couple of weeks, the plastic had split near the blade pivot and the whole thing was flexing in a way that made you nervous every time you used it.
She had already called the dealer. They gave her a price that made her pause, told her she needed a full replacement key, cut and programmed, and that was the only path forward. What they didn't mention was that the electronics inside her fob were working fine. The factory fob, the one with the FCC ID printed right on the back, was reading perfectly on my tester. The circuit board had no corrosion, the buttons were intact, and the transponder was healthy.
I met her in the driveway with a replacement shell and got to work. Transferred the internals from her cracked housing into the new shell, reseated the CR2450, verified button function one at a time, and checked range from the far end of the driveway. Everything came back clean.
She had been down to one key the whole time, so before I packed up we also made her a spare. Two working keys, done on site, for a fraction of what the dealer quoted.
She looked at the finished fob and said she had assumed the whole thing was toast. The electronics didn't care that the plastic was cracked. They just needed a shell that held together.
