2016 Ford Transit
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What exactly is a remote head key and what's inside it?

A remote head key is one piece of hardware that does two separate jobs. The blade turns the ignition. Built into the plastic head is a transponder chip that the vehicle security system reads at startup to confirm the key is authorized. Also in that same head is the fob circuit board, with your four buttons for controlling the doors remotely. The CR2032 battery powers only the remote side.

Q: My Transit is showing a key-not-detected warning. What should I check first?

Start with the CR2032. A weak battery causes exactly this symptom on the remote side. Swap in a fresh one and test again before assuming anything bigger is wrong. If that doesn't clear it, try inserting the key into the ignition and turning rather than relying on the remote signal. If it starts normally that way, you're dealing with the fob's broadcast range, not the transponder registration.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can I program it myself?

Not on the 2016 Transit. There is no onboard self-programming sequence for this key type. Registering a new remote head key to this van requires professional diagnostic equipment connected to the OBD port. The tool communicates with the vehicle security system directly to enroll the new transponder. The fob's remote functions are a separate enrollment step from the transponder, but both need the same equipment. If you bought a blank online, that's fine.

Q: All my Transit keys are lost. Is that a harder job than just adding a spare?

It's a longer process. When there are no working keys present, the vehicle security system has to be accessed in all-keys-lost mode through the OBD port, which takes more time than simply adding to an existing registered key. The previously lost keys get erased out of the system so they can't be used to start the van if they turn up later. Then the new key gets enrolled fresh. Plan for more time on site compared to a standard spare.

2016 Ford Transit Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy was visiting a friend near Moonlight Beach in Encinitas and tracked me down because he needed a spare for his 2016 Transit. Not an emergency backup sitting in a drawer. A real, working, daily-driver spare he could actually trust.

His first question was whether what I'd make him would be "as good as dealer." Honest question. Deserved a real answer.

I walked him through it on the spot. The remote head key for his Transit uses a specific transponder chip that has to communicate with the vehicle security system every single time the engine starts. The fob portion handles the lock and unlock buttons. Both have to work. The factory ID on his fob, the four-button layout, the blade profile, all of that has to match what the van is expecting. The blank I pulled from the van matched all of it.

What he'd be getting from the dealer is the same functional components plus a Ford logo on the housing and a much higher bill. What I cut and programmed on site, in his friend's driveway off Encinitas Boulevard, did exactly the same job.

I cut the blade on my machine, programmed the new key through the OBD port, and verified it started the van clean on the first turn. Then I tested every button on the fob. Lock, unlock, the other two. All confirmed.

He asked about the dealer price comparison almost as a formality at that point. He'd already watched the whole process. The answer was he saved a good chunk, and the key was done before he finished his coffee.

Ford Transit Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

My key broke off in the ignition. Can you get it out?▼

Yes. On the Transit the ignition cylinder is a conventional barrel, so a broken key fragment is an extraction job, not a column replacement. The part that matters: once the key breaks, the transponder chip is no longer sitting in the right position relative to the antenna ring, so the vehicle security system may not read it even if a piece is still in the lock.
