My key broke off in the ignition. Can you get it out?

Yes. On the Transit the ignition cylinder is a conventional barrel, so a broken key fragment is an extraction job, not a column replacement. The part that matters: once the key breaks, the transponder chip is no longer sitting in the right position relative to the antenna ring, so the vehicle security system may not read it even if a piece is still in the lock. That's why some owners with a partially broken key find the engine cranks but won't fully start, or won't start at all.

We extract the fragment without damaging the cylinder, decode the existing lock to get the correct cut, and produce a proper replacement from a fresh blank. That way you're not back here in six months because a worn spare finally gave out the same way.

Question 2

What exactly is a remote head key and what's inside it?

A remote head key is one piece of hardware that does two separate jobs. The blade turns the ignition. Built into the plastic head is a transponder chip that the vehicle security system reads at startup to confirm the key is authorized. Also in that same head is the fob circuit board, with your four buttons for controlling the doors remotely. The CR2032 battery powers only the remote side. The transponder gets its power passively from the antenna ring around the ignition, so the remote can have a dead battery and the van will still start as long as the chip is registered.

When the housing cracks or the key breaks, both functions are at risk. A replacement has to be cut to your van and programmed, not just one or the other.

Question 3

My Transit is showing a key-not-detected warning. What should I check first?

Start with the CR2032. A weak battery causes exactly this symptom on the remote side. Swap in a fresh one and test again before assuming anything bigger is wrong.

If that doesn't clear it, try inserting the key into the ignition and turning rather than relying on the remote signal. If it starts normally that way, you're dealing with the fob's broadcast range, not the transponder registration.

One thing to avoid: cycling the ignition repeatedly with a key the system isn't recognizing. The vehicle security system on these vans has a lockout behavior after repeated failed attempts, and clearing that state requires a programmer. Don't force it into that situation if the key-not-detected warning is new. Call first and describe what you're seeing.

I bought a replacement fob online. Can I program it myself?

Not on the 2016 Transit. There is no onboard self-programming sequence for this key type. Registering a new remote head key to this van requires professional diagnostic equipment connected to the OBD port. The tool communicates with the vehicle security system directly to enroll the new transponder.

The fob's remote functions are a separate enrollment step from the transponder, but both need the same equipment. If you bought a blank online, that's fine. Bring it to me and I can cut and program it on site. You're not throwing away what you bought, you just still need someone with the tools to finish the job.

Question 5

All my Transit keys are lost. Is that a harder job than just adding a spare?

It's a longer process. When there are no working keys present, the vehicle security system has to be accessed in all-keys-lost mode through the OBD port, which takes more time than simply adding to an existing registered key. The previously lost keys get erased out of the system so they can't be used to start the van if they turn up later. Then the new key gets enrolled fresh.

Plan for more time on site compared to a standard spare. The van doesn't have to go anywhere, I come to you, but the procedure itself has a built-in sequence that can't be rushed. In Encinitas I do these regularly, so it's not an unusual call.
