Worst case on a 2003 Ford Excursion is an all-keys-lost smart key where the car battery dies during programming and the body control module throws errors. It happens more than you'd think. A power interruption mid-security-handshake can lock the BCM into a fault state that makes some locksmiths pack up and tell you to tow it to the dealer.
A customer at a mechanic shop in La Mesa had exactly that situation. Another locksmith had attempted a key replacement on his Excursion, the car battery dropped voltage during programming, and the BCM went into security lockout. The other tech left. The mechanic called me.
I brought my ACDP bench tool as backup. I stabilized the battery with my jump pack first, then cleared the fault codes with my IM608 before starting a clean programming sequence. His smart key, FCC ID , was a 3-button proximity fob. The "key not detected" error cleared once the BCM reset, and the new fob learned on the first attempt. I showed the shop team what went wrong so they'd know to warn customers about battery voltage if it ever came up again.
Total job time was about an hour and a half, which is longer than normal. His bill was $135. The alternative was a flatbed to the dealer, a multi-day wait, and $314 or more. I carry backup tools and backup power specifically for when the first approach hits a wall.
