How Aurora Key Technology Changed Over the Years
1st Generation (G-body)
Aurora launched on GM's G-body with VATS, the resistor-pellet anti-theft from the late eighties. The blade itself carries one of 15 fixed resistor values between 400 and 12,000 ohms. There is no chip in the head. Programming a fresh key means decoding the pellet value with VATS interrogation tools and an EEPROM read off the BCM, so locksmith only.
1st Generation Update
For one model year, GM bridged eras. The 2000 Aurora dropped VATS for a Pass-Key Module reading a Texas 4C transponder chip in the head of a new remote-head-key design. Three buttons in the molded plastic head, mechanical blade still cut to your locks. On-board programming, yes, but it still demands a PIN from Techline, so it is not a DIY relearn.
2nd Generation
Pass-Key III arrived for 2001-2003 with a Megamos 13 transponder, the same chip family GM ran across PK3 platforms. Programming happens through OBD-II using the AKL three-cycle ignition routine, roughly 30 minutes of timed waits with the security light. Needs a proper scan tool and the right PIN, both of which live on our truck.
Identify the Key on Your Aurora
Plain metal blade with a small resistor pellet embedded in it. The lock and unlock buttons live on a separate fob, not the key head.
Remote and key fused into one plastic head. Three buttons up top, Texas 4C transponder chip inside, mechanical blade below for the cylinder.
Visually a near twin of the 2000 key, but the chip inside is the Megamos 13 used by PK3. Three buttons, standard blade, CR2032 powering the remote side.
What to Expect Price-Wise
Quoted prices cover the blank, the cut, programming for your specific immobilizer (VATS, PKM, or PK3), and bench testing. San Diego lockout calls separately run $105-$145.
How We Stack Up Against San Diego Dealers
Dealers love to quote Aurora keys like they are still 2003: parts on order, leave the car, come back next week. Our quote is built for now. Truck rolls today, blade cut at the curb, engine running before lunch.
Aurora Problems San Diego Owners Bring Us
Worn VATS Resistor Pellet
The pellet on a 1995-1999 Aurora key blade is a tiny resistor exposed to grit, sweat, 25 years of pocket lint. When the value drifts outside the BCM window, the starter kills and the dash lights up. We ohm the pellet against the 15 known values at your San Diego curb. Bypass or new blade.
PKM Module Failure
On a no-start 2000-2003 Aurora, the Pass-Key Module gets diagnosed first. After two decades of underhood heat from National City to Escondido, the PKM stops authenticating the transponder even with a known-good key. We scope the module first; only if it fails do we recommend replacement.
Transponder Chip Desync
Cranks, will not catch, security strobing? Classic transponder desync. Happens to every Aurora generation, after someone disconnected the battery in a Carmel Valley driveway. The chip is fine, the BCM forgot it. We run the full relearn (10-min VATS, GM Techline PKM, or 30-min AKL PK3).
Fob Battery Drain
Most 2001-2003 Aurora remotes that quit are running a dying CR2032. The hidden gotcha is contact corrosion on these 20-plus-year-old fobs that a fresh battery alone will not solve. At your curb we pop the housing, clean contacts, replace the cell, confirm signal on our reader.
Can You Program Your Own Aurora Key in San Diego?
Not happening on the 1995-1999 cars. VATS plus an EEPROM-locked BCM means the right tools (T-Code Pro, AD100, or equivalent) are mandatory. Anyone telling you to bench-program a 1998 in your driveway is selling something.
The 2000 Aurora needs a Techline PIN before any relearn will take. GM never released a customer-side procedure for this transition year. Pick up the phone, dial (619) 876-1271, and we will close it out at your address.
PK3 cars from 2001-2003 do have an owner-runnable AKL relearn: insert a pre-cut chip blade, turn to ON, wait 10 minutes 30 seconds for the security light to die, then cycle off and on twice more with the same timed wait. Total 30 minutes. Catch is, you still need a properly cut and chipped PK3 blank to start the procedure. Botch the timing and the BCM locks you out for an hour.

San Diego Trivia Worth Knowing
Hidden under the Aurora's hood was a serious racing pedigree. GM took the 4.0L Northstar V8 from your daily driver, pushed it to 650 horsepower, and dropped it in the Aurora GTS-1 prototype that ran IMSA endurance events. The same engine family that ferries kids to school in Poway once chased Le Mans-style podiums.
