I got a call from a guy in 4S Ranch, over near the newer part of the development off Camino del Sur. He had a 1998 Aurora he'd picked up used and the remote had never worked right since he got it. Previous owner told him the fob just needed a new battery. He swapped it. Still nothing.
When I pulled up he already had the fob sitting on the hood. Fresh CR2032, seated correctly, contacts looked clean. Pressed lock. Nothing. Pressed unlock. Nothing. The car itself ran fine, he was getting in with the mechanical key every time.
I checked the fob. The issue was simpler than he expected and more annoying than he wanted to hear: the fob had never been programmed to his specific car. It was the right style, probably came with the vehicle at some point, but whoever had the car before had reprogrammed their own fobs and this one got left behind. Happens constantly with used cars from this era.
I had the correct blank fob in my bag, ran the programming procedure on-site, tested all four buttons, confirmed the door lock response and the panic function. About twenty minutes total.
He mentioned he'd called the dealer just to get a quote before he called me. They told him they'd have to look into whether they even still supported it. I didn't say anything about that. The job was already done.
