How Intrigue Keys Changed Over the Years
Mechanical Key Only
Refreshingly simple security on the early Intrigue: nothing. No transponder, no Passlock, no chip in the head, just a mechanical B62 blade and a regular ignition cylinder. Cut a new blade to the cuts and you are starting the car. The simplest and cheapest Oldsmobile key job we run.
Passlock II Security Added
GM bolted Passlock II onto the Intrigue starting in 2000. The blade itself remained chipless, but a resistance sensor inside the ignition cylinder reads a value when you turn the key. A new blade demands a Passlock relearn before the BCM will release the starter, which is a scan-tool job we wrap up at the curb in under 30 minutes.
Identify the Key on Your Intrigue
Plain metal B62 blade with no electronics inside the plastic head. The keyless entry remote, if your car came with one, sits on its own fob using a CR2032 cell.
Looks identical to the earlier key, but your car's ignition has a Passlock II sensor that reads the key. After cutting, we perform a security relearn so the car accepts the new key. Your separate remote fob, if you have one, is programmed separately.
Intrigue Key Pricing in San Diego
Prices include the B62 blank, the cut, any Passlock relearn through OBD-II, and a clean-start test wherever the Intrigue is parked.
How We Stack Up Against San Diego Dealers
Dealers hand you a $400 receipt and walk away. We hand you a $150-$250 receipt plus a written protection plan that covers the replacement if the key fails inside 12 months.
Intrigue Problems San Diego Owners Bring Us
Sticking Ignition Switch (Recall 00V227000)
Before assuming the key is the problem, we scope the ignition switch on any Intrigue no-start. NHTSA recall 00V227000 covers Intrigue switches that wear, stick in accessory, or refuse to advance to START. If your VIN was never serviced, the hardware is overdue. We confirm at your curb in Mira Mesa.
Intermittent No-Start from Passlock Sensor Failure
Crank, crank, no start, dash security blinking? Passlock II sensor failure on a 2000-2002 Intrigue. The sensor reads a resistance value at every key turn, and after two decades in National City summers, that reading drifts and the BCM cuts fuel. Fix is a sensor swap with relearn or a bypass module.
Key Turns But Engine Will Not Start
Key slides in, turns, engine cranks, nothing fires. Same Passlock II story. High-mileage Intrigues from Escondido to Imperial Beach burn through these sensors they wire into a moving lock mechanism. We carry scan tools and bypass modules to relearn or eliminate the sensor from the chain.
W-Body Platform Key Confusion
The Intrigue rides on GM's W-body with Pontiac Grand Prix and Buick Regal, so some shops assume any W-body key blank works. Passlock calibration values vary across the platform, and B62 keyway depths are not interchangeable. We pull the VIN first, confirm the blank and Passlock band, then cut.
Can You Program Your Own Intrigue Key in San Diego?
Driveway DIY only covers the remote side: cycle the ignition between RUN and OFF a specific number of times, hold the door-cylinder switch, listen for the three chimes, and the BCM enters remote pairing. That sequence does not touch the Passlock side on 2000-2002 cars, which still needs an Autel IM608 or GM Tech 2 to relearn the resistance value.

San Diego Trivia Worth Knowing
Tucked under the hood of every 2000-2002 Intrigue was a 3.5-liter DOHC V6 GM called the Shortstar, derived directly from the Cadillac Northstar V8 engine architecture. That means your unassuming Oldsmobile sedan was running aluminum-block, dual-cam premium-engine DNA at midsize-sedan pricing. Cadillac engineering in an Oldsmobile body, sold for half the price.
