What battery does the 2000 Oldsmobile Intrigue key fob use?

CR2032. Standard size, easy to find anywhere. One thing worth knowing on these older fobs: the battery contact clips can get slightly bent over time, especially if someone has popped the case open before. A new battery sitting loose on a bent clip will read like a dead fob. When I replace the battery on one of these, I always check that the clips are making solid contact before closing it back up. A fresh battery and a properly seated connection are two different things.

I don't have my old fob. How do you know which replacement is right for my 2000 Intrigue?

Year, make, and model gets us there. The factory FCC ID on the fob is a useful cross-reference, but you don't need to know it or have it. I've done enough of these that I can identify the correct fob from the vehicle information alone. If you have the old fob but can't read the label, same answer. We match it from the car, not from a label you may or may not be able to find.

I lost all my keys to my 2000 Intrigue. Can you still make a replacement?

Yes, all-keys-lost is a regular job on these. The 2000 Intrigue uses a transponder key for the ignition, so this isn't just cutting a metal key. I come to the vehicle, cut a replacement key blade to fit your locks, and then program the transponder to the immobilizer through the diagnostic port so the car will actually run. The fob is a separate piece and gets programmed as well.

My Intrigue starts fine but stalls after a second or two. The key turns normally. What is going on?

That pattern, starts and immediately stalls, points to the immobilizer not recognizing the transponder in your key. The ignition cylinder turns because that's mechanical, but the vehicle security system cuts the engine when it doesn't see a valid chip signal.

This happens on these cars when an owner gets a key cut at a hardware store or a shop that only handles the blade and not the transponder side. The key fits the lock, the car cranks, and then it dies. It also happens when a programmed key gets damaged or demagnetized near the transponder.

This is something I diagnose and handle on site. If the blade is fine and the car is stalling, the transponder is where we look next.

Question 5

My fob locks and unlocks the doors but the trunk release button stopped working. Is the fob failing?

Accepted Answer

Not necessarily. On the 2000 Intrigue, the trunk release is handled by a dedicated circuit in the body control module, and that circuit can develop its own issues independently of the rest of the fob functions. Before assuming the fob is bad, check whether the trunk releases manually from inside the car. If the manual release works but the fob button doesn't, the fob signal for that button may still be transmitting fine and the issue lives on the vehicle side. If none of the trunk release methods work, that's a different problem altogether. A fob that does three out of four buttons consistently is usually still a good fob.
