Out in Fernbrook, I got a call from a guy who had been driving his 2002 Intrigue with just the blade for about eight months. No remote. He'd gotten used to it, manually locking every door, popping the trunk by pulling the interior release. He figured a replacement fob was a dealer-only thing and put it off.

When I pulled up, he handed me a fob that looked like it had been at the bottom of a work bag for years. Cracked housing, no battery cover, corroded terminals. The blade was fine, but everything else was done.
I had a matching fob in the van. Cut the blade to his vehicle, set the new CR2032, and connected to the OBD port to run the programming sequence. On these older GM setups there's an onboard procedure as well, but I use the diagnostic route because it's cleaner and I can confirm enrollment without guessing. Got the transponder registered first, then synced the remote buttons. Walked every function: lock, unlock, trunk release, and the fourth button. All of it working before I closed the van.
He stood there clicking the trunk button a few times just because he hadn't done it in almost a year.
The dealer was never really in the conversation. He hadn't called them because he assumed it would be expensive and slow. Turned out he was right on both counts, based on what his neighbor had paid for something similar. He saved a good chunk and didn't have to go anywhere.
