I was out in Coronado, over in The Cays, on a call that sounded simple enough. Owner of a 1998 Intrigue had lost his only key. Wanted a replacement made on site.
The car had been sitting for a while. One of those situations where you could tell it hadn't moved in a few months. He wasn't sure where the key had gone, and at this point it didn't matter.
I decoded the driver door lock right there in the driveway. The cut came off the lock directly, which is the cleanest way to do it on a car this age when there's no key to duplicate. Cut the blade, dressed the edges, and went to test it in the door.
Door opened fine. Then the ignition. It went in, but the turn felt gritty. Tried it a couple more times with light pressure and it loosened up. The cylinder wafers were just stiff from sitting. Worked it through a few cycles and it smoothed out to where it felt normal.
He'd already called a dealer earlier that week. They told him he'd need to tow it in. I did the whole thing in his driveway without moving the car once.
