The 2017-2019 V90 carries a 3-button smart key with a Texas Crypto AES transponder chip, push-button start, and passive keyless entry. Programming demands both OBD-II access and server authentication through Volvo's security gateway. Zero shortcuts, zero DIY.
Facelift 1, Same Security
First facelift. Volvo updated the infotainment and introduced the Care Key as a backup option, but the security architecture stayed identical. Still a Texas Crypto AES smart key with mandatory server authentication for programming. The CEM module remains the brain of the immobilizer, so Marco's tooling and process are unchanged from the launch cars.
Facelift 2, Mild Hybrid Era
Second facelift, mild-hybrid era. The 2022 V90 brings B5 and B6 mild-hybrid engines standard, plus a key tag option for minimalists. Under the hood of the security system, it remains the same Texas Crypto AES smart key talking to the CEM module. All-keys-lost situations require PIN extraction from the CEM, which is where professional tooling and experience earn their keep.
Identify Your V90 Smart Key
Standard SPA smart fob. Rectangular proximity key with push-button start, the Texas Crypto AES transponder paired through Volvo's VIDA server, and a hidden HU83 emergency blade tucked inside the fob body for dead-battery situations.
Cross Country trim variant. Hardware-identical to the standard V90 smart fob: same Texas Crypto AES chip, same hidden emergency blade, same VIDA programming. Marco runs it as the same job.
Care Key spare. Volvo's restricted-spare option for the V90, same hardware as the standard fob but the central electronics flag it with a speed cap and feature limits set through VIDA. Useful for valet runs or teen drivers.

Remote Key Battery Drain
Constant signal polling in Keyless Drive mode is the cause. Your V90 smart key listens for the car continuously, draining CR2032 cells in as little as six months on some cars. Fading range? Swap the battery first. Two-minute fix, three-dollar cell.
Keyless Entry Signal Interference
Press the door handle and nothing happens? Common in busy areas like downtown Gaslamp where 433MHz signal clutter interferes with the passive entry antennas in your door handles. Try the remote buttons. If they work fine, interference, not the key.
Immobilizer Sync Failure
People assume the key died when the real fault started with a dead 12V. When the V90 12V gets replaced or drains, the CEM module drops sync with your smart keys. Looks like key failure but is a comm breakdown. Marco resyncs with Autel IM608 or VVDI.
Detachable Blade Wear
Before assuming you need a new key, Marco checks the blade. The high-security blade on 2017-2021 V90 keys wears slowly, especially with regular cylinder use. Worn blade refuses to turn cleanly, forcing it risks the lock. Fresh blade on-site, precision cut.
DIY or Pro? V90 Reality Check
Zero DIY path on the V90. SPA platform means the Sensus immobilizer demands a live VIDA server handshake to register any new key. No on-board procedure, no key-turn trick, no button sequence pairs an unregistered fob.
Same story as the launch V90. The CEM module and server authentication requirement mean zero on-board procedure exists. Professional equipment required.
