Second Facelift
Second facelift, mild-hybrid era. The 2022-2023 B6 mild-hybrid powertrain arrives, keyless locking through the door handles becomes standard. The security architecture stays the same: CEM-based immobilizer with server authentication. Smart key still carries an ID 48 chip and a high-security blade, and Marco still needs professional Volvo diagnostic access to register a new key.
Final SPA Generation
Final SPA generation. Google built-in infotainment changes the diagnostics picture slightly, and the Recharge PHEV joins the Plus trim. The key itself stays a 4-button proximity smart fob with Texas Crypto AES chip and CR2032 cell. Server authentication through the CEM module is still mandatory for every key registration.

What Actually Breaks on S90 Keys
Key Fob Battery Drain
Your S90 proximity key broadcasts continuously so the car detects it at the handles. Nonstop transmission drains CR2032 cells faster than expected, especially if the car sits for days. Fading range traces to a tired battery; fresh cell, two minutes.
Immobilizer Sync Failure
Marco checks the fob battery first. A low or recently swapped cell can desync the transponder from the CEM module, leaving your S90 cranking but never firing. A CEM reset with the right diagnostic tooling brings key and immobilizer back into sync.
Keyless Entry Range Loss
Your S90 should pick up the smart key from 1-1.5 meters out. If you have to press the fob against the handle to unlock, the CEM antenna or harness may be wearing. Common on 2020-and-newer fleet S90s around UTC and Mission Valley with heavy daily use.
Proximity Sensor False Triggers
Owners think their S90 is being broken into when doors lock or unlock spontaneously. Real cause is the fob in a pocket near the handle, triggering the proximity sensor. Documented software quirk on 2017-2019 cars. A VIDA fob firmware update resolves it.
DIY or Pro? S90 Reality Check
