2021 Volvo S90 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A Euro specialist shop off Lomas Santa Fe in Solana Beach called me on a Thursday afternoon. They'd had a 2021 S90 come in for engine timing work.

While the car was there, the owner asked the shop to arrange a spare key. The shop called a locksmith they'd used before. That locksmith connected through the OBD port, hit an error mid-session, and left. The S90 wouldn't start. The central electronics module was sitting in a fault state, rejecting every key it had ever known, including the original.

The shop foreman was calm about it, which made it clear this wasn't the first time they'd seen a key job go sideways. What was different this time was the depth of the problem. The module wasn't just confused. It had partially written data that was blocking a clean re-enrollment.

I brought my bench programming equipment. We pulled the central electronics module out of the car. I read the secured memory, identified where the write had gone bad, cleared the corruption, and built the key table back from the dump. Then I wrote it back to the module and reinstalled it.

First attempt after reinstall, the module came online clean. I registered a fresh four-button smart fob, walked every function, and handed the shop a working key and a written summary of what the previous attempt had done wrong.

Two hours on site, start to finish. The owner got his car back the same day. The alternative was a flatbed to the Volvo dealer, a possible module replacement, and an open-ended wait. He saved a significant amount and didn't lose the car for a week.

The shop foreman asked me to leave a card. I left a few.
