I got a call from a guy over in Shadowridge who had already been burned once. He was standing next to his 2023 S90 in his driveway, and the car would crank and immediately die every single time he tried to start it. A different locksmith had already come out, attempted the job through the OBD port, collected payment, and left him with a car that still did not run. That locksmith's exit line was that the body control module was bad. The customer was now looking at a potential tow and a dealer repair bill on top of what he had already spent.
I asked him to walk me through exactly what happened. Engine cranks, fires for half a second, cuts out. Every time. That pattern is not a failed module. That is an immobilizer rejecting a key because the enrollment never finished properly.
On the S90, all-keys-lost is not something you push through the diagnostic port alone and call it done. The key memory lives in the body control module, and accessing it means pulling the module and reading it on the bench before any programming attempt. You generate the correct key data from that read, write it back, reinstall the module, and then finish the rest through the diagnostic port. Skip the bench step and the module never accepts the new key, no matter how many times you run the sequence.
I did the full job on site. Pulled the module, read it on the bench with my programmer, generated the key data, wrote it back, reinstalled everything, finished the programming sequence, and tested the new four-button fob. Clean start on the first try. I ran it three more times to be sure.
He watched the whole thing. Toward the end he said he thought his car was just broken. It was not broken. It had a half-finished job on it that looked like a failure.
The dealer comparison came up after, almost as an afterthought. He had called them earlier that day and was quoted a wait time that stretched into the following week just for the key to arrive, before labor even started. He saved a good chunk coming to me, and more importantly he did not lose another week of transportation waiting on a parts order.
