2018 Volvo S90
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long will a replacement key last?

Years, with normal use and periodic battery changes. SPA-generation fob housings hold up well. The most common owner complaints about these keys online are about cost and dealer access, not the hardware failing. Swap the CR2032 every year or two before it gets low enough to cause range issues, and the fob itself should outlast most reasons you'd ever need to replace it.

Q: What if the new key stops working after a few weeks?

Call us and we come back. That's the whole answer. The reason the warranty matters on an S90 is that key enrollment on the SPA platform is a full diagnostic session. If something fails after the fact and needs to be redone, you're not just swapping a battery. There's a timed procedure, a full key-memory rewrite, and all enrolled keys have to be present or they get dropped from the system.

Q: I only have one key left for my S90. Can you add a second without erasing the one I have?

Yes, and this is actually the smarter call before you lose the last one. On SPA-platform Volvos, an all-keys-lost situation is a harder job than an add-a-key. When you still have a working key, the enrollment process is faster and the existing key stays active. If you wait until you're down to zero, the procedure changes, takes longer, and costs more. A lot of S90 owners don't know that until they're already in the hard situation.

Q: My S90 shows a key warning on the dash but the fob battery is fine. What's going on?

A few things can cause this. The most common one owners run into is a fob that's technically got voltage but has a weak or poorly seated cell that reads okay but can't sustain a clean signal under the car's antenna read cycle. Worth pulling the CR2032, cleaning the contacts, and reseating it firmly before assuming the worst.

2018 Volvo S90 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

It was a Saturday evening, and I was already running calls near Alpine when the message came in from a couple out by the Viejas Area. They'd walked out to their 2018 S90 after dinner and the fob wasn't responding.

Not intermittent, just nothing. The door handles weren't lighting up on approach, the push-button start didn't see the key, and they were standing there in a dark parking lot trying to figure out their next move. One of them found the physical emergency blade tucked in the fob and got into the car, which is the right call, but that didn't solve the start problem.

I was about fourteen minutes out.

When I got there, the first thing I did was open the fob and pull the CR2032. It wasn't corroded, but it read nearly flat on my tester. Swapped it, reseated everything, and the S90 woke right up on the first touch of the door handle. No resync needed, no programming session, just a dead cell that had been fading long enough that the car had basically stopped trusting the signal.

I walked every function before I closed anything up. Both door handles, the trunk release button, the lock and unlock. All of it responded clean.

The whole thing took maybe twenty minutes including the drive. They mentioned the dealer was already closed for the weekend anyway, which I'd already figured. That's usually the part that sends people searching on a Saturday night.

Volvo S90 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on Volvo vehicles?▼

Professional-grade, OEM-spec keys matched to the factory fob configuration for your specific S90. Volvo owners run into this problem a lot: someone buys a fob online because the price looks right, but SPA-platform Volvos are picky about what they'll accept during enrollment. There are forum threads full of people who got a key that looked identical to the factory one, handed it to a locksmith or even a dealer, and found out it couldn't be paired.
