I got a call from a guy over in Spring Valley Village who had lost his only fob somewhere between a walk and his parking spot. He retraced his steps twice, checked with people nearby, nothing. His V90 was sitting there locked, no way in, no spare at home.
I told him I could be there that afternoon.
Getting into the car without a key is the first step, and I handled that mechanically at the door. From there, the all-keys-lost process on a 2017 V90 is not the same as most brands. The vehicle security system stores encrypted key data in the central control module. To generate a new key from nothing, I needed to read that module data directly. So I pulled the module, read the stored data with my bench tools, generated the new key credentials from what was in there, and wrote everything back.
The fob itself, the factory fob for this vehicle with the four-button layout, got cut and programmed on site. His V90 started in the same spot he had left it.
He mentioned on the way out that he had called the Volvo dealer first. They told him to tow it in and plan on a few days minimum. He saved a good chunk coming this way, and he did not have to pay for a tow on top of it.
All-keys-lost on a V90 takes longer than adding a spare because of the module work involved. But with the right bench setup, it is still a mobile job. That is the whole point of what I do out here.
