Basic Immobilizer Period
During this period, the Mercedes-Benz CLK used a first-generation immobilizer system. The transponder chip in the key sent a static code to the receiver ring around the ignition. On-board programming was possible with two working keys.
Security Refresh
Following industry-wide relay theft concerns, Mercedes-Benz updated the CLK's smart key system with motion-sensor fob deactivation and reduced broadcast range when stationary.

Key Not Detected After Battery Swap
Press lock or unlock, nothing happens, even with a fresh battery. Early C208 (1998-2003) cars use infrared that needs line-of-sight to a dashboard receiver, and that lens degrades from sun exposure. We clean or replace the IR receiver and resync.
Emergency Key Blade Stuck in CLK Fob
Owners assume a dead battery means the key is broken. Real problem on 2003-2009 CLKs is that low voltage or a battery swap knocks the ID46 or ID48 transponder out of sync with the EIS. We plug into OBD-II, run a full relearn.
CLK Cranks But Will Not Start
Plastic gears inside your CLK door cylinder actuators wear down, causing central locking to work intermittently or quit. Affects every CLK year from 1998 to 2009. We diagnose actuator vs key signal before any repair, so you do not fix the wrong thing.
Can You Program a CLK Key Yourself?
Mercedes-Benz CLK: Mercedes-Benz requires PIN-based authorization for any key programming on this platform. The PIN is not in the owner's manual - it must be read from the vehicle's computer.
Mercedes-Benz CLK: A second key can be added using the existing key through the on-board procedure. All-keys-lost still requires professional service.
