Got a call from someone near Strathearn Historical Park in Simi Valley. Their 1999 CLK had been broken into overnight, and the key was taken right off the counter inside. Not just a lost key situation. Someone out there had a working key to the car.

I connected through the OBD port to the EIS/EZS module and ran a full key reset. On these W208 cars, the EIS stores up to eight key positions. The reset wipes every one of them, then I register the new IYZ-3312 remote head key as the only authorized key. The infrared handshake between the key and the EIS has to sync clean, and the immobilizer chip in the key head needs to match what the module expects. If the owner wants a spare, both get written in the same session so the count is locked.
Once I finished programming, I tested the old scenario: could the stolen key start the car? Dead. Wouldn't even turn the EIS past position one.
The owner had already called the dealer. They quoted a tow-in, a multi-day wait for a Xentry diagnostic session, and a number that made the whole thing feel worse than the break-in. I handled it in the driveway in under an hour, for a fraction of what they were quoted.
