Got a call from a guy over in the Poinsettia neighborhood in Ventura. His 2008 CLK350 had one working key left, and the chrome side buttons were so worn down that the lock and unlock barely registered unless he squeezed the fob like he was trying to juice a lime.
He told me he had already called the dealer. They wanted him to leave the car for two to three days because the key had to be ordered, then cut on their Bravo machine, then programmed to the EIS. He just wanted to drive his car.
I showed up with the IYZ-3312 blank already in the van. Cut it on site using the key code pulled from the EIS read, then connected to the OBD-II port and wrote the new key's transponder data into the EIS module. After that, synced the four remote buttons: lock, unlock, trunk, and panic. Whole thing took maybe 35 minutes, including the time he spent watching me test every function twice.
The part that stuck with me was when he pressed the trunk button from about 20 feet away and heard it pop. He just stood there nodding like he forgot the remote was supposed to work from a distance. His old key had been dying so slowly he stopped noticing what he lost.
He kept the old key as a backup. I put a fresh CR2025 in it so at least the remote side still had some life.
