Got a call from a CLK owner out near Corriganville Movie Ranch in Simi Valley. He had one key left and the remote buttons had gone dead weeks ago. He'd been locking the doors with the key blade and figured he'd deal with it later. Then later showed up: he turned the ignition and got nothing. Dash lit up, fuel pump didn't prime, steering lock wouldn't release. Classic immobilizer rejection on these W208s.
He told me the dealer wanted the car towed in and quoted him a wait of several days just to get the EIS module diagnosed. That was before even ordering a key.
I got there, pulled the lower steering column cover, and checked the EIS. On these 1998 CLKs the infrared receiver and transponder antenna ring are both housed around the ignition switch area. His issue was straightforward once I could read the EIS with my diagnostic setup. The one remaining key had a weak transponder signal, and the key data in the module was partially corrupted, something that happens on W208s with age and low battery history.
Ran the all-keys-lost procedure through the OBD-II port, cleared the old key profiles, cut a fresh blade to factory spec, and programmed a new remote head key. Tested ignition, remote lock, remote unlock, panic, trunk release. Everything responded.
He sat on the hood and watched the whole thing. Said he thought the car was done. It just needed new key data and a fresh CR2025.
