Got a call from a guy on Main Street corridor in Ventura. His 2002 CLK was sitting in a lot behind one of the shops, and the only key he had was chewed up and barely turning the ignition. The infrared buttons had quit months ago, so he had been locking the car manually at the door every day.

I pulled up, checked the VIN, confirmed it was the W208 with the EZS module. Cut a fresh key blank to code, programmed the transponder through the diagnostic port so the immobilizer would recognize it, then synced the infrared remote. All four buttons: lock, unlock, trunk, panic.
The part people never think about is the IR receiver test. I stood at different angles and hit lock and unlock to make sure the receiver up by the mirror was actually picking up the signal cleanly. His old key had such a scratched-up IR window it was basically opaque. That is why he thought the remote "broke."
He sat in the car, turned it over, clicked every button twice, and just nodded. Whole thing took about 35 minutes. He kept his car the entire time, never left the lot, paid a fraction of what the dealer wanted.
