Got a call from someone over in the Thompson Boulevard district in Ventura. His 2001 CLK320 just stopped recognizing the key. He would put it in, turn it, and the engine would crank for half a second and cut out. Classic immobilizer rejection.
He had already looked it up online and was convinced the EIS module was dead. Ordered a used one off eBay and everything. I told him to hold off on swapping any modules until I got there.
Showed up, plugged into the OBD port under the dash, and pulled communication with the EIS. Module was responding fine. The issue was the infrared transponder in his original key head had gone weak. The signal was not reaching the EIS reader consistently. Happens on these W208 keys after twenty-plus years.
Cut a new HU64 blade to the factory bitting, paired a fresh transponder through the EIS using the SKC code from his original key data, and programmed all four remote buttons. Lock, unlock, trunk, panic. Tested the key five starts in a row, cold. Every time it caught immediately.
He still had that eBay EIS module sitting in the shipping box on the passenger seat. I told him to return it. The car just needed a working key, not a new brain.
Whole thing took about 35 minutes in his driveway. A fraction of what the dealer quoted him, and he did not have to leave his car anywhere for a week.
