Got a call from a guy in the Ventura Keys area whose 2006 CLK350 was sitting in his driveway with one key that barely worked. He had to hold it right against the ignition slot, jiggle it, wait, try again. Sometimes five or six attempts before the EIS would recognize the transponder and release the steering lock.
He had already been to the dealer. They told him the EIS module itself might need replacement, quoted him a number that made him leave, and said the car would need to sit in their shop for up to a week while they ordered parts and waited on authorization codes from Mercedes.
I pulled up, tested his existing key with my diagnostic tool on the OBD port, and read the EIS data off the N73 module. The key's infrared emitter was weak but still transmitting. The real problem was simpler: the battery contacts inside the key housing had corroded just enough to create intermittent connection with the CR2025. Cleaned the contacts, fresh battery, and the EIS picked it up on the first turn.
Then I cut and programmed a spare remote head key right there on the hood. Wrote the new transponder to the EIS, synced all four remote buttons, tested both keys back to back. About 25 minutes total.
He went from almost buying a new EIS module to just needing a battery clean and a spare key, done at his house for a fraction of what they wanted.
