Got a call from a CLK owner down at Ventura Harbor Village. He had been doing some work on his boat all morning and came back to find his key wouldn't turn in the ignition. Stuck solid. He could get in the car fine, doors locked and unlocked with the remote, but the key slid into the EZS slot and just sat there.
He was about to call a tow to the dealer.
I asked him on the phone if the steering wheel had any play in it. It did. Classic W209 move. The electronic steering lock, the ESL module, had seized up, which tells the EIS that the column is not released, and the EIS blocks the ignition sequence. The key was not the problem at all.
Drove out to the harbor, pulled the lower column cover, and addressed the ESL. Once the steering lock released, the EIS saw a valid state again and let the key turn like nothing happened. The whole thing took about 40 minutes including the drive.
He had already looked up what the dealer wanted for an ESL replacement and was staring down a pretty painful bill plus a tow plus waiting for an appointment. We handled it on site for a fraction of that. He went back to his boat. I packed up and left.
Sometimes the key that "stopped working" is the last thing you should blame.
