Pre-Chip Era
The earliest Mercedes-Benz G-Class models used plain mechanical keys with no electronic component. Any locksmith or hardware store could duplicate these keys by sight. No immobilizer, no transponder, no programming required.
Unified Fob Era
Mercedes-Benz unified the G-Class's remote and transponder into a single remote-head key. The transponder chip moved from the key blade into the fob body, and a flip blade provided the physical key function.

G-Class Key Fob Not Pairing After Programming
EIS module is the brain behind G-Class key recognition, and it fails more than owners expect. Intermittent no-starts usually trace to EIS, not the key. We diagnose EIS with VVDI MB on-site before any work, so you do not waste money on a key.
Aftermarket G-Class Key Will Not Program
Key turns fine but the engine will not start. Security light flashes or stays solid. The ID46 transponder lost its programming, more common on high-mileage G-Class. We reprogram through OBD-II, or cut and program a new key if the chip is dead.
G-Class Key Blade Worn Down
Owners assume the fob is broken when the remote dies. Nine times out of ten it is a dead CR2032. But some G-Class fobs drain batteries in six months from continuous RF transmission. Constantly replacing? We check for a hardware issue.
Can You Program a G-Class Key Yourself?
Mercedes-Benz G-Class: Mercedes-Benz requires PIN-based authorization for any key programming on this platform. The PIN is not in the owner's manual - it must be read from the vehicle's computer.
Mercedes-Benz G-Class: Due to enhanced security protocols, all key programming must go through OBD-II with PIN authentication. This applies to both key addition and all-keys-lost scenarios.
Mercedes-Benz G-Class: No on-board programming procedure exists. Mercedes-Benz locked this generation to dealer/locksmith tools only. Professional scan tool with up-to-date Mercedes-Benz coverage is required.
