2012 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a call from a guy at Paseo Nuevo Shopping Center in Santa Barbara. His 2012 G550 would crank but not fire. Dash showed the steering lock warning and "Key not recognized" in the cluster. He had already spent the morning on the phone with the dealer. They told him to tow it in, quoted a week minimum because Mercedes key orders go through their EIS database process and the key center can take its time.

He was sitting on a bench near his G-Class eating a sandwich when I pulled up. Looked tired of the whole thing already.

I plugged into the OBD port and read the EIS module, which on these W463 chassis trucks is the NEC-based processor board sitting in the steering column. Got the key data, cut a new HU64 blade on the mobile unit right off the back of my van, and wrote the transponder profile to match. Then synced the 315 MHz remote, all four buttons, including the rear hatch release which on the G-Class is that swing-out spare tire carrier.

Tested ignition on, ignition off, lock, unlock, panic, hatch. Walked around the truck twice. Everything answered.

He watched the whole thing from that bench. When I handed him the new key he just turned it over in his hand a couple times, like he was checking if it was real. Twenty-five minutes, start to finish, right there in the parking area. No tow truck. No week-long wait.
