2011 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Got a call from a G550 owner at La Cumbre Plaza in Santa Barbara. Key wouldn't turn over, remote wasn't doing anything, and the steering lock had him pinned in a parking spot near one of the restaurants.
He said the key had been "acting weird for a week." Short remote range, sometimes needing two or three cranks. That morning it just quit. No start, no crank, nothing on the dash but the usual immobilizer indicator sitting there staring at him.
I pulled the remote head key apart on his hood. The CR2025 was dead, but that was just the remote side. The real issue was the transponder board inside. Green corrosion across two of the NEC chip solder points, probably from condensation building up over time in that split shell. The blade slot on these keys is not sealed, and moisture creeps in slow.
Cleaned the board contacts, cut a fresh OEM-spec key blank to his lock data, seated a new CR2025, and programmed the transponder through the OBD port to his EIS module. Then synced all four remote buttons: lock, unlock, trunk, panic. Tested the steering lock release, the ignition cycle, the remote from 30 feet.
He sat in the driver's seat and turned it over like he was waiting for it to stall. It didn't.
The whole thing took about 35 minutes, right there in the parking lot. He kept his afternoon plans and saved a good chunk over the dealer route.
