Got a call from a guy down near Arroyo Burro Beach in Santa Barbara. His 2003 G-Class, the W463, wouldn't turn over. Key went into the EIS column, turned fine mechanically, but the instrument cluster just sat there. No crank. Dashboard showed the immobilizer indicator and nothing else.
He had already called the dealer. They told him the key would need to be ordered to VIN and it could be a week or more before it arrived. Then he would need to bring the truck in for programming. He said he sat in the driver's seat for a minute after hanging up, just looking at the steering wheel.
I pulled up, set my gear on his tailgate, and got into the EIS module through the OBD port. The W463 uses the older Motorola-based EIS on these early 2000s models, so reading the module and extracting the key data is a known procedure with the right equipment. Cut the HU64 blade on the portable machine right there in the parking area, programmed the infrared remote head key, and tested all four buttons: lock, unlock, trunk, panic.
The whole thing took about 40 minutes. He started it twice just to make sure. Then a third time.
He didn't have to leave his G-Class parked at the beach overnight and didn't have to arrange a tow. Just one visit, done on site, for a fraction of what the dealer quoted him.
