Got a call from a G-Class owner over on State Street in Santa Barbara. He had one working key left and it was acting up. Remote range had dropped to almost nothing. Lock and unlock only worked if he was right on top of the door. Panic button, same deal.
He had already called the dealer. They told him the key had to be ordered from Germany, pre-cut and pre-coded to his VIN, and it would be a few weeks. Maybe more. He asked if he could just bring the truck in and get it done same day. They said no.
I met him at his parking spot. Popped the old key open on his tailgate and showed him the CR2025. It was the original battery from who knows when, voltage way down. Swapped it. Cut the new blank on site, an HU64 profile, then ran the transponder programming through the OBD port. The EIS picked up the new key on the first handshake. Programmed all four buttons: lock, unlock, trunk, panic. Tested every function twice because that is just the habit now.
He watched the whole thing take about 25 minutes. Said the dealer had quoted him weeks of waiting. He got it done on a Tuesday afternoon, standing on the sidewalk.
