How Audi A5 Keys Changed Over the Years
B8 Pre-Facelift (Flip Key Era)
Audi kept things relatively simple here with a flip key and a ID48 (PCF7945AC) transponder chip. Your blade folds into the fob, and the immobilizer runs through Audi's Immobilizer III system. Programming can go through OBD-II or EEPROM depending on the specific configuration, but either way we handle it on-site.
B8 (Remote Head and Smart Key Options)
Audi stepped things up here with an ID48 (PCF7945AC) chip and the option for either a remote head key or a smart key depending on your trim level. Higher trims got proximity entry, while base models stuck with a traditional key. All of them run Audi Immobilizer III and program through OBD-II.
B8.5 Facelift (Smart Key Standard)
This is where the A5 went fully smart key with a PCF7945AC chip and push-button start on most trims. Keyless Go became standard across the lineup. Programming runs through OBD-II or on-board methods, and we carry the Xhorse VVDI and Autel IM608 to handle both.
B9 Early (Transition Year)
This is where security got serious. The 2017 moved to Audi Immobilizer IV with the same PCF7945AC chip but added server authentication requirements. Some 2017 models carry over B8.5 components, so we always verify by VIN before quoting. This generation may require dealer server access for transponder programming, and we will tell you that upfront.
Which Key Does Your A5 Use?
The original A5 flip key. The blade folds into the fob body. Three buttons for lock, unlock, and trunk. No push-button start on these.
Depending on your trim, you either have a traditional remote head key or a smart key with proximity entry. Both use a high security HU66 blade and three buttons.
Full smart key with push-button start and Keyless Go. The emergency blade is hidden inside the fob. You walk up, grab the handle, and the car unlocks.
Same smart key form factor as the B8.5 but running on the newer B9 platform with upgraded immobilizer security. Push-button start with proximity detection.

Common Audi A5 Key Problems
Smart Key Battery Drain
Proximity sensor in 2013-2017 A5 smart keys is always listening. Store the fob on a Simi Valley garage-wall hook and the CR2032 drains fast. Move the key farther, swap battery. If it keeps dying, the fob circuit may need work.
Transponder Sync Failure
A5 starts fine for weeks, then one morning the immobilizer light comes on and the engine will not crank. After a dead battery, module reset, or for no reason. Fix is OBD-II reprogramming to re-sync. We handle it with the IM608.
Keyless Go Range Loss
On the 2012-2017 A5, the culprit when the handle stops detecting your key is often a weak LF antenna in the door handle itself, not the fob battery. We test fob signal first; if it checks out, it is an antenna issue.
Blade Wear on HU66
HU66 high security blade on your 2008-2016 A5 wears with daily use, and once cuts round off, a programmed key will not turn. Cheap duplicates worsen it. We cut from a fresh blank using the original code, not a copy of a copy.
Can You Program an Audi A5 Key Yourself?
You can re-sync the lock and unlock buttons yourself using a simple relearn procedure with one working key. But this only fixes the remote functions. It does not program the transponder chip, which means it will not help if your key will not start the car. For anything involving the immobilizer, you need professional OBD-II equipment.

Did You Know?
You would not guess it, but the 2008 Audi A5 was one of the earliest luxury coupes to offer pocket-leave keyless start. Audi called it "Advanced Key," and it used rolling code encryption for passive entry before most competitors had even started developing the technology. That system became the foundation for the proximity key tech that is now standard across the entire Audi lineup.
