Got a call one evening from a woman staying at a spot near the Nyeland Acres area in Oxnard. She had a 2017 A5 and one working key, which she had just killed trying to swap the battery herself.
She bought a replacement cell, but it was slightly off-spec and she forced it into the CR2032 slot. Bent one of the internal battery contacts sideways. The fob went completely dead. No remote lock, no start button response, nothing. She pulled the HU66 emergency blade out and got the driver door open manually, but the car would not start because the transponder side of the fob was not being read either. Dead battery means no power to the Megamos AES 48 chip.
The dealer told her two business days minimum and the car would need to be towed in. She could not wait.
I met her at the car that night. Opened the fob on the hood so she could see the damage. One battery tab was bent flat where she had pried instead of slid. I straightened the contact, cleaned the corrosion off with a fiberglass pen, seated a fresh CR2032 correctly, and closed it up. Fob came back to life immediately.
Then I tested everything the way I always do: lock, unlock, trunk release, proximity detection at each door handle, and push-button start. She watched the dash like she expected it to throw another fit. It didn't.
She didn't need a new key. Just someone who could get to her and fix the small thing the dealer wanted to turn into a big thing.
