How the S4 Key System Evolved
B5: The Original S4
You turn this key in the ignition like any other key, but there is an ID48 transponder chip inside the head that talks to the Immobilizer II system. No remote buttons, no battery, no flip mechanism. Just a standard blade with a chip that has to match your ECU before the engine fires.
B6/B7: Remote Head Key
Audi combined the remote and the key into one unit. Your B6 or B7 S4 uses a 3-button remote head key with an ID48 chip and a high-security blade that requires a specialized sidewinder cutter. The Immobilizer III system means programming goes through the OBD-II port, and the CR2032 battery keeps the remote side alive.
B8: Flip Key Era
The blade folds into the fob now. Your B8 S4 runs a Megamos ID48 chip inside a 3-button flip key, still on Immobilizer III. Same high-security blade, same CR2032 battery, but the programming requires PIN extraction from the ECU before we can write a new key. Cleaner design, slightly more involved process.
B8 Facelift: Updated Electronics
Same flip key form factor as the earlier B8, but Audi updated the electronics under the hood. Your 2012 through 2015 S4 still uses an ID48 chip and Immobilizer III, but some models now require server authentication during programming. That adds a step, but we handle it through our OBD-II tools without any trip to the dealer.
B9: Smart Key Arrives
This is where things changed significantly. The 2016 B9 S4 moved to a proximity smart key with push-button start and Audi's Advanced Key system. The laser-cut emergency blade is there for backup, but the key communicates wirelessly. Programming requires dealer server authorization, and we will tell you that upfront before we roll out.
B9: MLB-evo Smart Key with Server Auth
The full B9 run settles onto the MLB-evo platform with AES encryption and online Audi server authentication. A three-to-four-button proximity smart key with a laser-cut HU66 emergency blade and a CR2032 battery. Every key has to be authenticated against Audi's online server before it will start the car, so this is a server-gated job that needs the right tooling and a live subscription. We carry both and explain what is involved before we roll out.
Which Key Does Your S4 Use?
A simple metal key with a hidden chip inside. No buttons, no battery. It looks basic but the ID48 transponder must be programmed to your car or the engine will not start.
Your key and remote are built into one piece. Three buttons for lock, unlock, and trunk. The thick high-security blade needs a specialized cutter that most hardware stores do not have.
The blade folds into the fob body when not in use. Same three buttons and high-security blade as the B6/B7, just in a more compact package.
Looks nearly identical to the 2009-2011 flip key. Same blade, same battery. The difference is in the electronics, which may require server authentication during programming.
A proximity fob that stays in your pocket. Push the button to start. The hidden emergency blade is laser-cut and only used if the battery dies or the system fails.
The B9 proximity key on the MLB-evo platform. Walk-up entry and push-button start, but every key has to clear Audi's online server before it will work, so this one needs the right tooling and a live connection. Hidden laser-cut HU66 emergency blade for when the fob battery dies.

EZ Car Keyz vs. the Dealer
Lost all your S4 keys? The dealer needs a tow and a week. We need about an hour in your driveway.
Common S4 Key Problems
Transponder Sync Failure
S4 cranks but will not start, or immobilizer light stays on after a battery swap. On 2003-2015 models the ECU loses sync with the transponder after a swap or failed programming. We re-sync the ID48 chip through OBD-II in about 30 minutes.
Key Fob Battery Drain
People assume the fob is broken when it stops locking from across the lot. On 2009-2016 S4 flip keys and smart keys, constant signal polling drains the CR2032 fast. If you replace batteries every few weeks, we check the circuit for a short.
High-Security Blade Wear
High-security sidewinder blade on your S4 has tight tolerances. Years of use wear the cuts and the key struggles to turn the ignition or open the door. Common on B5 through B8 in Simi Valley and Camarillo. We cut from code, not your worn key.
Smart Key Antenna Failure
First check on a 2016 B9 S4 that will not detect the key: fob battery. If the battery is fine and the car still does not see the key, the proximity antenna module inside the car is likely failing. Mimics a dead fob but needs module replacement.
Can You Program an S4 Key Yourself?
No DIY option here. The B5 S4 requires a diagnostic tool with a 5-digit login code and VAG-COM software to match the transponder. You need a locksmith or dealer.
Professional scan tool required for PIN reading and ID48 transponder programming. There is no on-board procedure for adding keys to these models.
You can pair the remote buttons yourself if you have one working key. Insert the key, hold unlock, turn to ON, and follow the sequence. But this only programs the lock/unlock buttons. The transponder chip still needs professional tools.
Same remote pairing procedure as the earlier B8. You can sync the fob buttons at home with a working key, but the immobilizer side requires OBD-II programming with professional equipment.
The B9 smart key requires dealer server authorization for all programming. No DIY, no workaround. This one goes to the dealer.

The B8 S4 (2009-2015) was the only generation to use a supercharged 3.0L V6 engine, producing 333 horsepower. Every other S4 generation used either a turbocharged inline-four, a twin-turbo V6, or the legendary naturally aspirated 4.2L V8 from the B6/B7 era.
