Got a call from a guy over in the RiverPark neighborhood in Oxnard. His 1999 S4, Nogaro Blue, the one everyone on Audizine argues about. The flip key housing had cracked right at the hinge pivot where the HU66 blade folds out. The blade was loose, the CR2032 was rattling around inside, and the plastic split ran across the back cover near the battery door.
He had already called the dealer. They told him the key and fob are one assembly, the whole thing has to be replaced and reprogrammed. Quoted him a wait time of over a week because the 4D0 837 231 P shell had to be ordered.
I pulled the key apart on his driveway. The PCB was fine. The ID48 transponder glass capsule in the blade head was intact. The 315 MHz remote board still had clean solder points. This was a housing problem, not an electronics problem.
Swapped everything into a new aftermarket shell that fits the 4D0837231P profile, dropped in a fresh CR2032, and tested. Blade flipped clean. Lock, unlock, trunk, panic, all four buttons responded. Then I verified the immobilizer side by starting the engine and watching for the dashboard immobilizer light to go out after two seconds, the normal handshake between the ID48 chip and the cluster.
Whole thing took about 20 minutes. He kept flipping the blade open and closed like he just got a new knife.
