A woman staying at one of the smaller hotels along Main Street corridor in Ventura called me around 8 PM. She had one key for her 2000 Audi S4, tried to swap the CR2032 herself, bought the wrong size cell, and bent the battery leaf contacts forcing it in. Remote was dead. Car would not recognize the transponder either because the fob housing was not seated back together right, and the ID48 chip had shifted in its slot.
The dealer she called told her to tow the car in. Two business days minimum once it arrived. She was leaving Ventura in the morning.
I met her in the hotel lot. Opened the 4D0837231P fob on the hood so she could see inside. The contact leafs were bent inward and the ID48 glass transponder had slid sideways off its cradle on the circuit board. Straightened the contacts, reseated the chip, dropped in a correct CR2032, and snapped the housing shut.
Then I tested every button. Lock, unlock, trunk, panic. Walked the perimeter checking remote range. Had her start it twice, turn it off, pull the key, reinsert, start again. The immobilizer III handshake was clean each time, no dash warning, no flashing LED on the cluster.
She just watched the instrument cluster for a few seconds after the last start, like she was waiting for something to go wrong again.
The whole thing took about twenty minutes. A fraction of what the dealer wanted, and she kept her morning plans.
