The call came from the Santa Susana Knolls area on a Tuesday morning. She was already late.
Her only key to a 2012 Audi S4 had finally given out at the worst possible moment, the fob shell had been cracking at the pivot hinge for weeks, and when she went to fold it closed that morning, the blade snapped. Half the key was in her hand. The other half was stuck in the door lock cylinder.
I got there, extracted the broken blade from the cylinder, and checked the electronics still sitting inside the cracked flip shell. The circuit board was intact. We could work from what was already there.
I transferred the salvaged electronics into a new shell, paired a fresh key, and cut a new blade to the vehicle. She ended up with two working keys instead of zero.
Forty minutes on site. The dealer was going to be a multi-day appointment, an order from the parts department, and a bill that made her wince just hearing the estimate. She saved a good chunk and kept her morning from being a total loss.
She mentioned she had known the hinge was going for about two months. The smart move with these is getting a spare cut before the only key reaches that point.
