A guy in the Ormond Beach area of Oxnard had just picked up a 1998 Audi S4 from a friend of a friend. Good shape, fair deal, one key. The seller mentioned offhand that a spare would not cost much. It always sounds that way until someone actually calls a dealer.
He called the Audi dealer and got a number that stopped him cold. He had just started his first real job, fresh out of school, and between the down payment and insurance, that quote landed hard. He found me online and asked if dealer pricing on these was just what it was.
I told him yeah, Audi dealers charge what they charge. But he did not have to use the dealer.
I met him in the gym parking lot before his workout. He handed me the original fob. I popped the blade out, confirmed the key type, and got to work on the hood of my van. The existing key gave me what I needed to produce a second one that the car would accept. Cut the blade, handled the transponder side, tested the remote functions on the new fob before I handed it over.
He did a quick walk around the car testing everything. Both keys worked. He went in for his workout and I was already gone.
He saved a good chunk over the dealer quote, got it done in one visit without leaving his neighborhood, and now has a second key that makes any future replacement a much simpler job than starting from zero.
