She was at the rental car return lot in Strathearn, Simi Valley, early on a weekday morning, about to swap from a rental back to her own 2010 Audi S4. The S4 had been sitting in the lot while she traveled. The key was not in her bag. She retraced everything in her head, then called the hotel she had checked out of an hour earlier. They searched the room. Nothing.
She had a flight home in six hours and a car she could not start.
She called the Audi dealer first. Earliest they could see her was the following week, and they needed the car there in person for key authorization before anything else could happen. She called me right after.
I was there in about 35 minutes. The S4 in that generation uses a three-button remote flip key, the factory fob paired with the ignition through the vehicle's immobilizer. With one key lost and zero spares, this was an all-keys-lost job. I connected through the OBD port, read the security data from the vehicle, generated the correct key data for her car, and cut and programmed a new flip key on site. The whole thing took under an hour from the time I pulled into the lot.
She returned the rental car, walked back over, and started the S4 on the first turn. Made her flight.
The dealer visit would have been a next-week appointment, a tow or a ride to get the car there, and a wait while they sourced the part. That timeline was not going to work for her. Mobile just made more sense.
