A Saturday night in Windsor North, right near the River Ridge area of Oxnard. A guy had been at a conference at one of the hotels off the water, valet-parked his 2008 A5, and by the time the event wrapped up and the valet brought the car around, he realized the fob was gone. Probably left on a table in a conference room that was now locked for the night.
The hotel concierge, trying to be helpful, told him smart key replacement on an Audi was dealer-only and the dealer was closed until Monday. He was standing next to his car with no way into it and no way to start it. That part is what gets people: no key slot to fall back on, no mechanical override for the ignition. The car just sits there.
I drove out to him. All-keys-lost on this generation of Audi is not a simple job. The immobilizer module holds encrypted security data, and before any new key can be generated, that data has to be read and processed. I connected my equipment, pulled the data from the module, sent it through the calculation server to get the return file, used that to generate a working key at the dealer level, and then ran the key-learning sequence over OBD. His 4-button fob came up, the car powered on, and he drove out of that valet lane before midnight.
He asked me afterward what would have happened if he had waited for the dealer. Two days minimum, probably more. Towing fees on top. Parts possibly ordered from overseas depending on stock.
Getting a spare made while you still have one working key is the move. That job is much simpler. The all-keys-lost version works, but it is a longer process and you do not want to need it on a Saturday night at a hotel.
