A couple came out of a restaurant near Via Marina in Oxnard on a Friday night, around 9pm, and their 2014 Audi A5 just sat there. Fob wasn't responding. No lock, no unlock, nothing. They tried the handle. Nothing. Fresh CR2032 in the fob, then I ran the programming sequence through my diagnostic equipment to re-register it to the vehicle. First start attempt after that, the engine came up clean.
The part that stuck with me was how convinced they were that the car was broken. Not the key. The car. Because that's where your head goes when a modern Audi goes quiet on you. Sometimes the answer is a battery and twenty minutes.
They made it home that night. The dealer would have been a wait until Monday at minimum, and the cost would have been a good chunk more than what they paid me. I carry the fob housings, the blades, and the batteries in the van. When the parts are already in the drawer, a Friday-night call runs the same as any other job.
