How Concorde Keys Changed Over the Years
Early Generation (1995-1997)
Chrysler kept the key system simple during these years. Your Concorde used a plain mechanical key with no transponder chip and no factory immobilizer involved. There's nothing to program, nothing to sync, and no electronics in the key head at all. We cut it on-site at your location and you're back on the road in minutes.
Mid Generation (1998-2001)
Starting with the 1998 model year, Chrysler added a factory immobilizer to the Concorde. Your key now carries a transponder chip embedded inside the plastic head, and the car will not start unless it recognizes that chip. The 3-button remote runs on a CR2032 battery and handles lock, unlock, and trunk. Programming the transponder requires connecting to the OBD-II port under your dash with dealer-grade programming equipment. We carry everything needed to handle this job at your location, no tow required.
Late Generation (2002-2004)
The 2002 through 2004 Concorde carried forward the same transponder chip technology from the prior generation, along with the factory immobilizer. The key still has three remote buttons and takes a CR2032 battery. The way the immobilizer module communicates changed slightly, but the practical result is the same: programming requires a PIN code pulled through the OBD-II port using dealer-grade equipment. We do this in your driveway anywhere in San Diego County.

Which Key Does Your Concorde Use?
A straight metal key with no electronics inside. If you have a separate remote fob for keyless entry, that's a standalone unit with its own battery and has no role in starting the car.
The plastic head of this key holds a transponder chip the factory immobilizer checks every time you turn the ignition. Three buttons on the attached remote cover lock, unlock, and trunk release.
Same general layout as the 1998-2001 key. The transponder chip and the three-button remote are built into one unit. The car won't start unless the chip is properly programmed to the factory immobilizer.
Common Concorde Key Problems
Immobilizer Module Failure
The factory immobilizer module is the most common reason a 1998-2004 Concorde refuses to start. When it fails, the car can't verify the transponder chip in your key, so it shuts down fuel and ignition. We diagnose the module through the OBD-II port. If it needs replacing, we program the new module and your keys on-site without a tow to a dealer.
Transponder Key Recognition Loss
You turn the key and the car doesn't start. The security light flashes. This often happens after a battery disconnect or a jump start, because the factory immobilizer can lose sync with previously programmed keys. We see this regularly with San Diego County drivers, especially when a battery dies in summer heat near the coast or inland. A relearn procedure through the OBD-II port typically restores your existing keys without replacing anything.
Worn Ignition Cylinder
A sticky or hard-to-turn key isn't always a key problem. High-mileage Concordes from any model year can develop worn tumblers inside the ignition cylinder, making the key stick, turn stiff, or fail to reach the start position. We check the cylinder before recommending a new key, because the fix sometimes has nothing to do with the key itself.
Remote Fob Battery Drain
The 1998-2004 Concorde remote takes a CR2032 battery. When it drains, you lose lock, unlock, and trunk functions. That's usually a simple fix. The catch is that some fobs develop an internal short that kills a fresh CR2032 within days. If your new battery dies fast, the fob itself needs replacing, not just the cell.
Can You Program a Concorde Key Yourself?
If your Concorde is a 1995, 1996, or 1997 model, there's nothing to program. The mechanical key has no chip inside. Get it cut and you're done.
For 1998-2001 models, you can pair the keyless entry remote yourself using a button sequence in the ignition. The transponder chip is a different story. Programming it to the factory immobilizer requires professional equipment and can't be done at home, even if you already have working keys. Remote pairing, yes. Starting the car with a new key, no.
The 2002-2004 Concorde follows the same split. The remote pairing can be handled at home, but programming the transponder chip requires a PIN code and dealer-grade equipment connected to your OBD-II port. That part of the job needs a professional.

Did You Know?
The 2002-2004 Chrysler Concorde received a notable body revision that trimmed overall length compared to the previous generation, giving the car a tighter stance without reducing cabin space. Chrysler also raised the output of the Limited trim's V6 engine to 250 horsepower for those final years. It was a focused update rather than a full redesign, but it made the late Concorde meaningfully different from the cars that came before it.
