How the Cayman Key System Evolved
987.1: Remote Head Key
Your first gen Cayman uses a 3-button remote head key with an ID 48 transponder chip and a high security blade. You turn it in the ignition like a traditional key, but the Porsche Immobilizer system has to recognize the chip before the engine will fire. Programming requires professional tools; there is no DIY shortcut on these.
987.2: Flip Key
Your 987.2 Cayman switched to a flip key design. Same ID 48 chip, same high security blade, but the key folds into the fob for a cleaner look. Porsche also added interior radar surveillance to the immobilizer system, which means the security handshake between key and car got more involved. Still uses a CR2032 battery and still needs professional programming for the transponder.
981: Smart Key
Your 981 Cayman moved to a proximity smart key with an ID 49 (PCF7945P HITAG PRO) chip. This generation uses server-based authentication, which means the programming tool has to communicate with Porsche servers to authorize a new key. It is the most secure Cayman key system in this range, and it requires specialized equipment to handle properly.
718 / 982 (Current Generation)
The 718 Cayman runs Porsche's server-authenticated immobilizer from 2017 on. Spare keys are programmed through a live online Porsche session, which we bring to you.
Which Key Does Your Cayman Use?
A traditional key with built-in remote buttons. The blade stays out and you insert it into the ignition to start the car.
Same 3-button layout, but the blade folds into the fob body. Press the release and the key flips out when you need it.
A proximity fob that communicates with your Cayman wirelessly. There is a hidden emergency blade inside for manual door entry if the battery dies.
The 718 Cayman (type 982) moved to Porsche's server-authenticated smart key in 2017. Proximity unlock, push-button start, with a laser-cut emergency blade inside. A spare pairs through Porsche's online server, which we do on site. Spare key only, all-keys-lost requires the dealer.

Common Porsche Cayman Key Problems
Key Fob Battery Drain
First check on a 2006-2012 Cayman with a dead fob: battery draw rate. The Porsche Immobilizer keeps a constant comms loop with the key and chews CR2032 batteries. Most times a fresh cell plus a resync solves it.
Transponder Synchronization Loss
Most "broken key" calls are a sync issue between transponder and immobilizer after a dead battery or low voltage event. Affects 2006-2016 Caymans. We reprogram the transponder to the ECU on-site in under an hour.
High Security Blade Wear
Cayman key will not turn or feels rough. Porsche high security blades have precise cuts that wear, especially with frequent door cylinder use. We carry Porsche-specific cutting equipment and cut a fresh blade in Simi Valley.
Smart Key Proximity Failure
The internal antenna in your 2013-2016 Cayman smart key is the weak point. Water ingress or a hard drop kills it; the car stops detecting the fob at the door handle. Not a battery issue. You need a replacement smart key programmed to the 981.
Can You Program a Cayman Key Yourself?
No self-programming option exists for the 987.1 Cayman. The Porsche Immobilizer system requires professional diagnostic tools and security codes to learn a new transponder. You need a locksmith or dealer for this one.
You can resync the remote buttons after a battery change by turning the ignition to position 2 and holding the unlock button until the horn honks. But this only restores lock and unlock functions. It does not program a new transponder or add a new key to the immobilizer. For that, you need professional tools.
The 981 Cayman uses server-based authentication for key programming. There is no self-programming procedure. Every new key has to be authorized through Porsche servers using specialized equipment.

Did You Know?
Back in 2005, when Porsche launched the first Cayman, they built the key system around an immobilizer that uses rolling code transponders specifically designed to prevent cloning. Every time you start your Cayman, the key and car exchange a new encrypted code, making the previous one useless. This is why DIY key duplication is essentially impossible without specialized diagnostic tools, and why a simple hardware store copy will never start your engine.
