2010 Porsche Cayman
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How fast can you get to me near Carpinteria State Beach?

Usually within 30 minutes of your call, sometimes faster depending on where I am when you reach me. I run a mobile setup, so the programming equipment, key blanks, and cutting machine are all in the van. There is no service bay, no queue, no parts on order. You call, I come to you, whether that is the beach parking lot, a hotel lot, or a parking structure.

Q: Can I get a replacement key made the same day?

Yes, and that is genuinely one of the bigger differences between calling me and calling the dealer. Porsche dealers order keys by VIN. The blank ships from overseas, and owners of 987-generation Caymans have reported wait times anywhere from one week to several months depending on parts availability at the time. Some have been told to just plan around not having a spare. That is not a great answer when you are locked out today.

Q: My Cayman starts fine but the fob buttons stopped working. Is the key dying or is it something else?

This comes up a lot on 987-generation Caymans. The most common culprit is a weak CR2032 that still has enough voltage to communicate with the immobilizer at close range but not enough to power the remote functions reliably. The car sees the key and starts, but the lock and unlock signals are too weak to reach the receivers. Swap the battery first. Make sure it sits flat against both contacts. If the buttons come back, you are done.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can it be programmed to my 2010 Cayman?

It depends on whether the replacement fob matches the factory FCC ID on your original. If it does, and if the fob is genuinely compatible with the 987 Cayman's security system, it can be programmed. But the programming itself cannot be done at home. There is no button sequence or ignition-turn trick that works on this system. It needs a diagnostic tool that communicates with the immobilizer through the OBD port.

2010 Porsche Cayman Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was working near Carpinteria State Beach on a Tuesday afternoon when my phone rang. Oral surgeon, underground parking garage in Carpinteria.

His 2010 Cayman was on sublevel 2 and it was not going anywhere. The smart key had gone completely dark, and the dealer's first instruction was to get the car to them. He could not move the car. A flatbed could not fit past the low ceiling and the tight spiral ramp. The dealer's advice was useless in that situation.

I drove in, walked down two levels with my bag and my OBD interface, and got to work. The garage was dim, ceiling maybe six feet overhead, and the Cayman was sitting between a concrete pillar and an SUV. Tight space. I have worked in worse.

I pulled immobilizer data through the OBD port, programmed a replacement fob to the car, and cut the emergency blade to match the door lock. Tested every button. Tested the start. Tested the door handles. The car never moved an inch until he drove it out himself.

The dealer quote assumed the car was already sitting in their service bay. It was not. Mine did not.

How long does a 2010 Porsche Cayman key replacement take?▼

If you still have a working key and just need a spare added, figure 30 to 45 minutes on site. That covers cutting the emergency blade and programming the new fob through the diagnostic port. All-keys-lost is a longer job. The immobilizer needs to be fully reset before new keys can be registered, and that process has a timed sequence built into it. On-site time runs closer to 90 minutes to two hours depending on how the system responds.
